My Grumpy Goalie

I live across the hall from Northcross’s grumpiest man.

Unfortunately, he’s also the city’s starting goalie.

By day, I’m the sunshine neighbor with plants in the hallway and cookies for the building. By night, I fall asleep to the sound of Knights games on TV and the occasional door slam from the six-foot-four storm cloud who lives opposite me.

When a burst pipe floods my apartment right before winter playoffs, I’m suddenly homeless, freezing…and standing in his doorway with a suitcase and a very desperate smile.

He offers me his spare room with all the enthusiasm of a delayed penalty.

House rules: no talking on game days, no falling for your roommate, and absolutely no distracting the goalie.

But sharing a kitchen means brushing shoulders at midnight. Sharing a couch means accidentally napping on his chest after away games. And sharing a thin wall means hearing every time he mutters my name when he thinks I can’t hear.

He’s grumpy, guarded, and convinced love is the one shot he can’t afford to take.

I’m the neighbor who promised herself she’d never fall for a hockey player.
